Atlante Zoologico Popolare, Volume I (1863), Mammals, First Edition Italian Zoological Folio with Lithographic Plates
Published in Naples in 1863, this is the first volume of Giovanni Boschi’s Atlante Zoologico Popolare, an ambitious zoological atlas issued in multiple folio volumes during the nineteenth century.
This volume, dedicated to the General Introduction and Mammals, contains over 200 pages of text together with a series of large zoological lithographic plates illustrating mammals and related scientific subjects. Produced under the direction of publisher Raimondo Petraroja, the work drew upon contemporary Italian and European zoological research and was intended to bring natural history to a broader audience.
The book is printed in a large folio format measuring approximately 40 × 28.5 cm and remains an impressive scientific publication of the period. The volume retains its original quarter-leather binding with marbled boards.
Condition is fair. The spine is cracked, the boards are heavily worn and may be partially detached, and the marbled paper shows abrasion and handling wear. Pages display age toning and scattered foxing. Twelve full-page black and white lithographic plates are present. Completeness of any additional illustrative material has not been verified and the book is offered as described.
A substantial nineteenth-century zoological folio suitable for collectors of natural history, scientific illustration, zoology, and Victorian-era educational publishing.
Collector Notes
Volume I from a scarce multi-volume nineteenth-century Italian zoological atlas. Large-format scientific works of this type were produced in relatively limited numbers and are increasingly difficult to find complete. Even as a single volume, it offers attractive display value and historical interest for collectors of zoology and natural history illustration.
